2023 Year in Review: Workplace Sentiment Heading Into the New Year

4 minute read

As Vietnam and the whole of the APAC region’s economic landscape evolves, organizations must recognize the urgent need for transformation to ensure their survival.

The Asia Pacific region has long been recognized as an economic powerhouse, housing both advanced and rapidly emerging economies that have played a crucial role in shaping the global economy. However, as we move forward, the region's growth trajectory is poised for transformation. The convergence of financial, environmental, and social pressures, have given rise to complex challenges. Today, we witness an amplified need for organizations to reshape uncertainty into opportunity, complexity into clarity, and problems into potential.

The Changing Landscape

For the first time, there was a striking similarity between employees and employers regarding the critical need for transformation to ensure survival. An alarming 39% of employees believe that their organizations are unlikely to survive more than a decade if they continue on their current path, mirroring the concerns expressed by 53% of Asia Pacific CEOs in a 2023 CEO Survey.

Factors Impacting Workforce Readiness

To understand the workforce's readiness to adapt, let’s identify six key factors that influence their ability to evolve and thrive:

Business Viability

Both employees and employers acknowledge the necessity of reinvention for business viability. The alarming statistic of 39% of employees foreseeing their organization's demise within the next ten years aligns with the concerns expressed by CEOs.

Employee Sentiment

"The Great Resignation" phenomenon continues to reverberate in Asia Pacific. Although job satisfaction remains steady at 57% compared to 2022, approximately 40% of employees express a high likelihood of seeking a pay raise, promotion, or even changing employers in the coming year. This indicates a growing willingness among employees to make career changes.

Workforce Skills

A significant percentage (44%) of employees anticipate significant changes in the skills required for their jobs within the next five years, but only 48% have a clear understanding of these changes. Interestingly, human skills such as adaptability/flexibility, collaborative skills, and critical thinking are deemed more important than technical or core business skills. Unfortunately, less than half of the respondents feel that their employers provide opportunities to effectively apply their skills in the near future.

These results could be influenced heavily by the introduction of AI systems into the workplace. 2024 will be the year we see businesses use these AI systems in real-world settings, ranging from conversational interfaces to autonomous systems. Such systems will revolutionize industries such as healthcare, education, robotics, and e-commerce and transform how we interact with the world around us.

Emerging Technology

Employees in APAC have expressed optimism about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace. 41% believe that AI will enhance productivity and efficiency, and 34% see it as an opportunity to acquire new skills. However, 22% lack confidence in their ability to acquire AI-related skills, and 16% fear that AI may replace their roles entirely.

Work Environment

This year also saw a lack of a supportive work environment conducive to innovation and experimentation. Only about 30% of employees believe that their managers tolerate small-scale failures or encourage dissent and debate, revealing a misalignment with CEOs' perceptions. Additionally, feedback, crucial for fostering a culture of transformation, is uncommon, with only half of the employees actively seeking or providing constructive feedback to their coworkers.

Climate Action

There is a noticeable absence of urgency among employees in driving their employers to take climate action. Only 41% feel that their employers have a responsibility to address climate change. This aligns with the medium-term investment plans of CEO’s in the region, who prioritize climate actions but not in the short term.

Conclusion

As Vietnam and the whole of the APAC region’s economic landscape evolves, organizations must recognize the urgent need for transformation to ensure their survival. The workforce plays a pivotal role in driving this reinvention, necessitating their full engagement, motivation, and eagerness to contribute. However, several challenges need to be addressed, including concerns about business viability, employee sentiment, workforce skills, emerging technology, work environment, and climate action. By addressing these factors and creating an environment that fosters innovation, adaptability, and sustainability, organizations can navigate the changing landscape and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.
